The Rock Responds to Anthony Russo’s Suggestion He Plays Himself in the MCU

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a positive reply to Anthony Russo’s suggestion that he plays himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fresh off the success of the latest MCU film, Marvel Studios is looking to set-up the next several years of the franchise with a new narrative. Since several of the universe’s principal characters bid goodbye in the flick, it means that a slew of new heroes is expected to be introduced sometime in the near future. And if it was up to the Avengers: Endgame co-director, one of those upcoming players should be for the former pro-wrestler-turned actor.

Marvel Studios is keeping their post-Phase 3 plans close to the chest. No film past Spider-Man: Far From Home has been confirmed as of yet, although with their imminent return to Hall H at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans are convinced that Kevin Feige and his team will finally lay out their blueprint for the next couple of years. Aside from Cate Shortland’s Black Widow and planned sequels, the company will also be rolling out several new sub-franchises with The Eternals and Shang-Chi – both of which are said to be actively casting. And based on Johnson’s recent social media post, he may be open to joining the MCU – but only if plays himself.

Taking to his official Twitter account, The Rock calls out on the Russo Brothers after Anthony floated the idea that the actor should play himself in the MCU. Johnson and the director crossed paths recently at the MTV Movie and TV Awards where the former was awarded the Generation Award while the latter collected the trophy for Endgame’s win as Movie of the Year. Fans quickly flocked The Rock’s post chiming on the matter, some of them even suggesting who he can play in the Marvel big screen franchise. Check out his tweet below:

Johnson is tied to a few projects, including Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and a gig with Warner Bros. and DC where he is slated to bring the villain Black Adam to life. The character was supposed to debut in David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! in April but plans changed. But while there’s no official word when fans can expect him to finally grace the big screen as the character, he continues to hype it up. Now, considering that there’s really no ruling that an actor or a director for that matter (evidenced by James Gunn scoring jobs for both series) cannot be involved in two competing franchises, seeing The Rock in the MCU is within the realm of possibility.
