Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Won’t Be Called Asgardians of the Galaxy

Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will not be called Asgardians of the Galaxy. There was a lot of speculation about the title, particularly after Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame and mentioned the “Asgardians of the Galaxy” as a joke. Those rumors gained even more traction when Thor actor Chris Hemsworth voiced interest in such a project.

In Marvel Comics, Asgardians of the Galaxy was the team that replaced the Guardians of the Galaxy when that comic book series ended in 2018. The Asgardians’ first appearance was later that year, with a story written by Cullen Bunn and art by Matteo Lolli. The ongoing series featured characters with Asgardian ties, including Thor’s sister Angela, Valkyrie, Kevin Masterson, an anthropomorphic frog named Throg, Executioner and the Destroyer. Although some Marvel fans were in favor of seeing such a lineup on-screen, others weren’t too thrilled about the prospect of even using the title Asgardians of the Galaxy for the new movie.

Fortunately, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has confirmed again that the movie will not be called Asgardians of the Galaxy. Gunn posted his response to the fans’ request not to call the film that in his latest Instagram story with a simple message of “Don’t worry.” It should come as little surprise since Gunn has been referring to the movie like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for years, which is likely to be the film’s final title. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 had a rocky start, particularly after Disney fired Gunn for what the company called inappropriate tweets made earlier in his career. Gunn took the firing seriously and issued an apology for his previous behavior. After public outcry from Marvel fans, as well as most of the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Disney rehired Gunn for the third film in the franchise, stating the company felt his apology was sincere and that Gunn had grown as a person since posting those tweets. Gunn’s rehiring reignited the excitement of Guardians of the Galaxy cast, crew and fans.

Although Guardians of the Galaxy 3 won’t begin filming until 2020, there is already a lot of speculation about the movie. Gunn has confirmed the film will finish Rocket Raccoon’s story arc. Fans also want to know how the film will handle Gamora, whose fate was changed by events in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. With these questions remaining about existing characters, it’s good to see Gunn’s commitment to wrapping up their stories before focusing on something like the Asgardians.
