The 93rd Academy Awards took place on Sunday night at Union Station in LA, a change from the typical Dolby Theatre. And while this year was far from typical compared to year’s past, fans, of course, still tuned in and had lots to say! Let’s get into it.
It’s obvious, 2020 and 2021 are the most unexpected and unprecedented years most of us have all experienced.
So, it’s not too shocking that the Oscars & other award shows have had to adapt and deal with their fair share of unexpectedness. And maybe the most unexpected thing to happen on Oscars night… celebrities were taking invisible fake alcohol shots on the red carpet.
Which can we just say… why fake shots?… why not real ones? Ohh, it’s most likely COVID-related, of course. Anyways, we digress. Viola Davis and ‘Borat’ star Maria Bakalova were spotted on the Oscars red carpet downing invisible shots.
Viola might’ve just snagged herself “Best Actress” award of the night for her performance in ‘Taking fake shots on the Oscars red carpet.”
And Maria is definitely a contender in the “Best Actress” category for her performance of ripping an invisible shot. Not really sure how, why, or where this trend started, but we’re massive fans! We only spotted these two celebs doing them, and quite honestly… we need more actors imitating taking a shot!
After taking home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for “Judas & The Black Messiah” in February and accidentally getting his acceptance speech cut off due to technical issues, Daniel Kaluuya got total redemption with his Oscars speech.
Daniel took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Judas & The Black Messiah,” During this acceptance speech, he gave a shout-out to his mom & dad… and it wasn’t the typical “Thank you mom & dad” and move on. Instead, Daniel was very, very thankful his parents met & had sex to bring him into this world! Yep, “Like it’s incredible. My mom met my dad, they had sex. I’m here. You know what I mean, so I’m so happy to be alive, i’m going to celebrate that tonight.” Daniel’s sister was utterly mortified, and his mom was just as confused as the rest of us!
Of course, this moment made for some social media GOLD, and the memes started pouring in!
This person tweeted a photo of 2020 Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho holding two Oscars together to make it appear they are kissing, labeling one oscar, ‘Daniels mom’ the other ‘Daniel’s dad’ and Bong Joon-Ho as ‘Daniel Kaluuya.’
Another person wrote, “Daniel Kaluuya throws a curveball into his best supporting actor acceptance speech & his mom’s face is priceless/” And this fan wrote what mainly was on all of our minds, “I would like to thank Daniel Kaluuya’s parents.”
Upon leaving the Oscars stage, Daniel addressed the fact he thanked his parents for having sex. “Is that going to live on? I think that’s pretty obvious that all of our parents had sex. I know my mom’s probably going to text me some stuff, but um here we are.” Here we are, true!
History was also made at the 93rd Academy Awards with the first Asian-American woman and second woman ever to take home the Oscar for Best Director. Major congratulations go out to Chloé Zhao for taking home the Best Director Oscar for “Nomadland.”
In her touching speech, she held up her Oscar and said: “This is for anyone who has the faith and courage to hold onto the goodness in themselves and to hold onto the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that.” What a fantastic message we should all hold onto.
We can’t pass up some honorable mentions from the big night, H.E.R became a first-time Oscar winner, and Glenn Close got down and dirty while dancing to “Da Butt.” Glenn has been preparing for Hot Girl Summer 2.0, or should we say 2.21.
There were a TON more moments that literally would keep us here for hours, so let me know in the comments below what were your favorite Oscars moments.
For us, it would have to be Zendaya, Oh My God. She absolutely slew the carpet and looked incredible in that yellow dress. We can’t stop thinking about it… Then stay here to find out which celebrities turned down ICONIC movie roles!
