“I see your face almost every night / I just wanna be there when you wake.”
Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett have joined forces to release a brand new emotional duet for the upcoming High School Musical season: The Musical: The Series, so could this potentially be stirring up past emotions?
By now, we all know how the story goes: boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy breaks girls heart, the girl drops a bombshell of a song rumored to be about him, and now boy and girl have set the drama aside to release a brand new duet for their starring roles in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 2.
Although this might come as a shock considering the drama that exploded over Olivia’s song “drivers license,” which was rumored to be about Joshua and his alleged girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia and Josh’s High School Musical characters remain lovers.
That said, the two were able to channel some of their past feels into a new mashup single called “Even When / The Best Part” about longing for one another during a long-distance relationship. “The best part is knowin’ there’s someone that makes it all worth while / I’m 1000 miles away…”
The song, which I absolutely LOVE, by the way, was written for the upcoming season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which sees Olivia’s character Nini leave East High to study at the Youth Actors Conservatory.
As a result, Nini and Josh’s character Ricky try to make a long-distance relationship work, which results in their new duet sung over the phone about how much they love each other despite their geographical differences.
Despite their heartache, the chemistry between Olivia and Josh is undeniable as fans are LOVING what they’re hearing.
One user commented on the song, “The fact that they still have great chemistry is still there EVEN WHEN they’re not in the same room.” At the same time, another praised their maturity despite the past drama, writing, “This is what being professional looks like and making the art a priority. Mad respect for these two young actors.” Technically, “Even When / The Best Part” marks Olivia and Josh’s second duet they’ve recorded for the series, followed by “Just for a Moment,” in which they both co-wrote. However, unlike “Just for a Moment,” neither Olivia nor Josh co-wrote the new duet, which is likely the reason why neither has promoted the song via social media.
But it seems there are no hard feelings between the two as Josh did recently share his thoughts on Olivia’s latest single, “deja vu,” last week via Instagram stories, writing, “SUUUUUUPER late on this but… I love this song so much @oliviarodrigo!!! The world better watch out for the album!!!!!”
That said, the new duet is getting fans excited for the upcoming season of the series, which airs on May 14th on Disney+, AND Olivia’s debut album Sour is set to drop just a week later, so get excited, guys!
