Prince Harry’s upcoming plans to return to the U.K. might be taking a backseat after his recent trip to attend Prince Phillip’s funeral didn’t exactly go as planned. Let’s get into it.
Last month, Prince Harry returned to Windsor Castle to attend his grandfather, Prince Philip’s funeral. It was a shocking turn of events, given Harry & Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah just aired in early March. This trip shocked fans as it marked the first time he returned to England since stepping down as a senior working member of the royal family.
However, given the family’s strained relationship, the reunion allegedly didn’t go as well as many had hoped. While Meghan was advised not to attend due to being too far along in her second pregnancy,
Harry issued a speech during the funeral mentioning his wife, saying, “You will be sorely missed, but always remembered—by the nation and the world. Meghan, Archie, and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter)– will always hold a special place for you in our hearts.”
He was also seen talking to his estranged brother, Prince William, at one point, but royal experts now weigh in on his second return, which was slated for the first weekend in July, for the unveiling of a statue in honor of his late mother, Princess Diana. July 1st would also mark Diana’s 60th birthday, which would make sense for Harry to attend, but it’s not looking likely he’ll pay the palace another visit.
Philip Dampier, author of Royally Suited: Harry and Meghan In Their Own Words, recently spoke to The Sun and predicted that Meghan could play a large role in Harry’s decision to skip out on the statue unveiling.
He said, “I personally don’t think Meghan will return to the U.K. And there must now be a serious doubt as to whether Harry will come over for the unveiling of a statue for Princess Diana on what would have been her 60th birthday in July.” Dampier also dished on the “broken relationship” between Harry, Meghan, William and his wife Kate Middleton, which he said is still “strained” even after Harry’s recent visit.
He added, “The relationship between the so-called former ‘Fab Four’—Harry, Meghan, William and Kate—is now so broken and delicate that everyone is looking for the slightest signs it is getting better… or worse. The discussions after Prince Philip’s funeral were a start, but were clearly very strained and only an opening move.”
The future of the royal family and their relationship is currently up in the air as the damage from the past few years, and the Oprah interview is still pretty fresh. Dampier shared his thoughts on the best possible way for everyone involved to make amends, suggesting that they all focus on their new ventures for now until their issues fade out.
He said, “Harry and Meghan now have all they want to make them happy if they are going to be. To carry on a war with Harry’s blood family is unnecessary and counterproductive, and the sooner they realize that the better.”
He also explained that they should continue to move on with their lives; he said, “stop playing the victim and stop playing on their royal connections by leaking stories while pleading for privacy.” Dampier agreed that the public has begun to “see through” their ploys and that it would be in their own best interest to stay in their lane, basically.
Harry did appear in good spirits during his latest appearance at Sunday’s Global Citizen Vax Live benefit concert held in Los Angeles, where he and many other high-profile figures joined forces to raise awareness about the importance of getting vaccinated.
Meghan was not in attendance as she’s currently in her third trimester with the couple’s second child, but it seems they are both very satisfied with their current situation. As for the future of the royal family and their relationship, there looks to be a long road to recovery, so that only time will tell…
