Selena Gomez has always made it her priority throughout her career to help others, and now she’s proving that to be true yet again with new education and advocacy campaign. Let’s get into it!
If you weren’t aware, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and believe it or not, and May starts today. (say day depending on what day it goes up) we know 2021 is flying by, and we still feel like 2020 never even happened. Selena Gomez is ahead of the game, per usual, and plans something special for Mental Health Awareness month.
Last September, when she launched her makeup brand Rare Beauty, Sel also started the Rare Impact Fund, which was launched to raise $100 million over the next 10 years. A portion of every product sold and funds raised from partners go directly into that fund and back to the community.
And now, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Rare Beauty is introducing a new education and advocacy campaign called Mental Health 101 that’s focused on bringing more mental health services and financial support to schools.
In May, Selena’s brand will be matching $200,000 of donations made to the Rare Impact Fund. And she took to Instagram to reveal why this cause is so important to her.
Sel wrote, “I’m so grateful that we get to launch Mental Health 101. This campaign is so close to my heart because of my own struggles with mental health. I know first hand how scary and lonely it can feel to face anxiety and depression by yourself at a young age.” Selena continued and explained that her journey could’ve been very different if she had learned about mental health earlier.
She said, “The world needs to know that mental health matters. It’s just as important as your physical health and I wish we could all acknowledge that not just in works but through our actions.” Selena hopes this program will be a stepping stone for others that she wishes she had, and she provided action items for those who want to get involved.
First and foremost, they have a Change.org petition that you can sign. It only takes a few seconds, we recommend you to join the thousands of people who have already became part of this amazing journey.
Additionally, Selena started a GoFundMe page for May, and it goes up to $200,000, which, as I said, Rare Beauty will be matching. And lastly, she just asked fans to share the post and tag a friend to get the word out. All pretty easy requests from our girl Sel for a cause that is so important!
Selena also spoke to People Magazine about this project, saying, “I wish I learned about mental health the way I learned about other subjects growing up. Every young person deserves to learn about their mental health at a young age so they’re equipped to ask questions, have access to resources and empower themselves.” And we couldn’t agree more.
Fans have already been resharing the post and thanking Selena for making this conversation such a priority. It really is such an important cause, and I’ve already signed the petition. I hope you all do too!
And we’ll keep you posted as I’m sure Selena will continue to speak out about Mental Health 101 throughout the month of May. For now, if you want more on Sel, stick around for more updated news. Also, let us know down in the comments below what you think of this project and how you plan on getting involved.
