Imagine winning your very first Billboard Music award ever, and on your way up to the stage to accept the award, the D.J. plays the wrong song… unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to Da Baby. Let’s get into it.
At the 2021 Billboard Music Awards this past Sunday, DaBaby took home the award for Top Rap Song for his hit ‘ROCKSTAR,’ featuring Roddy Ricch, but there was one big problem…
While making his way to the stage to pick up his new hardware and say a few words, someone accidentally played Post Malone and 21 Savage’s 2017 ‘Rockstar’ instead of the DaBaby track of the same name for which he had literally just won an award!
This huge screw-up went on to become the cringiest moment of the ceremony as Post Malone wasn’t even nominated at all for this year’s BBMAs! But DaBaby wasn’t about to let that ruin his special moment in the spotlight, and he quickly shrugged it off right when he took the mic…
Take a look: “It’s me. It’s me. How I look with that?” The rapper began working with the crowd asking everyone how he looked holding the award, and of course, he was met with cheers and applause that helped everyone forget about the embarrassing situation.
In his acceptance speech, DaBaby gave himself props for having the courage to drop his song ‘ROCKSTAR’ at the height of a global pandemic, only to see it become the longest-running number-one track on the Hot 100 chart in 2020. That’s seven whole weeks back to back, in case you guys were wondering… DaBaby then thanked his team, and of course, he also showed a lot of love to his fans and supporters, saying, “because if y’all don’t press play, music don’t get heard.”
And it was no easy feat either as he was up against the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce’s ‘Savage’ and Cardi B and Megan’s ‘W.A.P.’ in the same category. By the way, DaBaby also won Top Streaming Song for his ‘ROCKSTAR,’ and he actually had 10 nominations going into this year’s BBMAs, which, as we mentioned before, were his first.
And fans were quick to react to the big mistake and awkwardness around it posting things on Twitter like: “I know they didn’t play Rockstar by Post Malone as DaBaby was going for his award ashjrjeosncod” and: Did they just play Post Malone’s Rockstar when DaBaby went to collect his award for his song Rockstar??? The disrespect!!!
It’s worth noting that Post Malone’s “Rockstar” also won Top Ran Song at the 2018 BBMAs and spent 8 weeks topping the Hot 100 chart, but it’s still no excuse to get them mixed up at such an important moment. And during a post-show press conference, DaBaby also dedicated his two major wins of the night to his late brother Glenn Johnson who tragically took his own life in November of last year.
He said, “Long live G. This is all for you. Anything I do is for him, it was already for him — for my family from the getgo. So it’s to keep his name alive as much as I can and to keep inspiring his kids. That’s what it’s all about from this point forward. And check on your people.” Very well said, DaBaby, and a big congrats to you for your two big wins!
And now, to relive some of the most memorable performances at the BBMAs, you can stay over here. Then let me know down in the comments what you thought of this huge mistake and what would you have done?
