Due to the increase in online activities, the number of online scams has increased significantly, especially during the pandemic. For example, when people start to go online, many people now prefer online shopping. A recent report showed that from 2017 to 2019, cybercriminals lost a record number of Americans, and they lost approximately $7.6 billion due to online fraud. Now, in 2020 alone, people have lost more than half.

Cybercriminals use various tactics, such as phishing and deception. Identity prevents people from finding out their true identity. Some of them try to obtain the user’s sensitive information by looking at the user’s trusted personal data. Some criminals place links on third-party websites to steal user data when they click on these links.

A new study published by SocialCatfish shows that American consumers have lost more than four people. In 2020 alone, it will reach US$2 billion. According to research, these criminals mainly target dating platforms or some gaming websites. Most of these websites are young and easily caught.

These scammers initially referred to their scripts as scam tutorials. In front of them, when these scammers try to win the trust of innocent people, they will give them false reasons, such as they have problems and need money, or they will return as soon as possible.

SocialCatfish collected data from various law enforcement agencies, showing that approximately $621 million was stolen from California residents through online fraud. Nearly $170 million was confiscated from Ohio residents. However, these criminals failed to steal money from the populations of South Dakota, New Hampshire, and West Virginia.
