Christa Pike, a death row inmate from Tennessee, became conscious and began speaking after a failed execution attempt last week.
Her attorneys said she is still receiving critical medical care while handcuffed in the hospital, as per their statement issued on Tuesday.
An anesthesiologist who is advising her defence team described the survival as highly unusual.
The prognosis remains unclear but at a minimum, the anesthesiologist said a long recovery is expected.
The BBC has published an analysis by Sarah Smith on recent events after the failed execution.
