Hundreds of people were detained in Delhi during an anti-government demonstration organised by The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), with the group’s founder among those held, according to BBC News.
Abhijeet Dipke, who founded the CJP, was detained together with other party leaders shortly after landing in the capital, the party said in a video it shared on social media.
Footage circulated by the CJP showed protesters striking the windows of a bus after being taken into custody, the BBC reported.
Delhi police had turned down the party’s request for permission to hold the rally. Tens of thousands of security personnel were deployed across the city and roads were barricaded ahead of the event, per BBC News.
The CJP had stated in advance that the protest would proceed despite the refusal.
The movement traces its origins to May, when India’s Chief Justice likened some unemployed young people to “cockroaches.”
BBC correspondent Azadeh Moshiri was in Delhi and reported on what the latest protest is about.
