Trump says Ukraine-Russia energy ceasefire is 'effective immediately' as Moscow stays silent

A view of Kyiv, Ukraine, where residents face winter electricity outages, as reported by the BBC's Dan Johnson
US President Trump said an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia was reached and is "effective immediately". Zelensky says Kyiv will back it if Russia does too, but Moscow has not confirmed, and he says a Kharkiv power plant was hit right after the announcement.

US President Trump announced in a social media post on Sunday that Ukraine and Russia had reached an energy ceasefire, saying it was “effective immediately”, BBC News reports.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in response that his country is prepared to support an energy ceasefire provided Russia does the same. He added that such a move could “become a major step toward ending the war”.

Moscow has not confirmed that it has agreed to the arrangement.

According to Zelensky, a Ukrainian power plant in Kharkiv was struck by Russia “immediately after” Trump’s post on Sunday.

The BBC’s Ukraine correspondent Dan Johnson reports from Kyiv, where Ukrainians are heading into another winter with electricity outages that cut off heat, light and even water.
