The foreign secretary has summoned Iran’s ambassador to make clear that “Britain will not tolerate threats on our soil” following last month’s incident at RAF Fairford, the Foreign Office has said.
Ed Miliband said Iran’s “continued attempts” to undermine the UK’s security “through its criminal networks, proxy groups and state-backed malign activity is unacceptable”.
The Foreign Office has also sanctioned two Iranians, among them the head of the regime’s counterespionage operations. Both men face travel bans and asset freezes.
On Monday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told MPs that the incident at the airbase in Gloucestershire was “almost certainly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard”.
Burnham also indicated that further sanctions could be imposed on Iran over its suspected role.
A major incident was declared and dozens of homes were evacuated after police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the airbase in the early hours of 27 September.
Seven men, all in their 20s, have been arrested and later bailed in connection with the incident so far. No one has been charged.
