Andy Burnham has ignited a political row by asserting that Russia interfered in the 2016 referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union, the Guardian’s Politics Weekly UK podcast reports.
Burnham has also stated that he wants Britain to have closer ties with the EU, according to the programme.
The podcast describes the dispute as one of three major difficulties confronting the prime minister before a crucial budget at the end of October. The other two are named as migration and Donald Trump’s erratic response to Ukraine and Russia.
The episode is presented by Pippa Crerar and Jessica Elgot, produced by May Robson and Nada Smiljanic, with music by Axel Kacoutié. Maz Ebtehaj is the executive producer. It was published on Monday 12 October 2026 at 16.50 BST.
