Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas was elected unopposed amid the joint opposition’s boycott of the election.
The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mahmood chaired the Legislative Assembly session to conduct the election for the new Leader of the House for the rest of the constitutional period, ending in June 2026. PTI’s Tanveer Ilyas received 33 votes.
Opponents in the AJK Assembly, comprising PPP, Muslim League and JKPP, have boycotted the election. PTI has 32 seats in AJK Assembly, PPP 12, Muslim League 7, JKPP and Muslim Conference have one seat each.
Sardar Tanveer Ilyas is the Prime Minister-elect and will take office at 3pm today.
Following a no-confidence motion submitted against him, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi resigned from office.
Before his resignation, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi had terminated five members of his cabinet over misconduct and suspicious activities.
