Jesy Nelson spoke out about when she finally knew it was time to cut ties with Little Mix in her first interview since leaving the group. Let’s get into it.
For the first time since her departure from Little Mix back in December, Jesy Nelson is getting candid about the feelings she had upon leaving, as well as what’s next on the horizon. While gracing the cover of Cosmopolitan U.K. for their June 2021 issue, Jesy appeared as confident as ever before as she dished on life after the band.
Although she had previously been open about her mental health struggles, having revealed a suicide attempt and explaining the constant criticism about her weight, Jesy shed more light on just how unhappy she was as one-fourth of Little Mix.
She said, “I didn’t know that I could be this happy. I thought when I was in the group that it was just normal to feel that way [insecure]. And because I’d felt like that for 10 years, I just thought, ‘This is life.’”
While she was in the band, Jesy also admitted to Cosmo that she used to describe herself as ‘honest, hardworking and sad,’ and now can confidently describe herself as ‘honest, content and free.’
Jesy also admitted her true feelings right after leaving the band and explained that it was a bittersweet feeling, but as sad as she was to go, she knew this was the right decision. “Mentally, I felt free and like a massive weight had been lifted off my shoulders, because for me, I felt an enormous amount of pressure being in a girl group.”
Still, Jesy appears to have no ill-will toward her former bandmates, Jade, Leigh-Anne, and Perrie, explaining that one of the best things about being in the group was “everything that we achieved together, building the most incredible fanbase and just traveling the world together.”
Unfortunately, the good times just couldn’t outweigh the bad for Jesy, as she described the hardest part about being in the group, which was constantly being compared to her three other bandmates.
In fact, Jesy also spoke about what she felt was her breaking point, which she recalled filming the music video for “Sweet Melody,” explaining that they had to film this video after just having been in lockdown.
Jesy said that when coming back to work after being so happy being around family, “I immediately became a different person. I had anxiety. Whenever we had a music video, I put an enormous amount of pressure on myself to try and lose weight.”
Just after she decided to leave the group, Jesy felt a wave of relief and even revealed that fellow artists, including One Direction’s Liam Payne, reached out to her with kind words. “He actually sent me a really nice message just basically saying if I ever wanted to talk, he’s always here, which was really lovely.” Jesy is now excited to navigate this new normal, which she describes as “a lot more chill” and “not as structured,” but does still deal with the occasional Internet trolls.
With this new outlook, she’s been able to see these cyberbullies as people she feels bad for, rather than she feels threatened by, saying, “For me, if you feel the need to be negative toward someone, it’s because you don’t feel good within yourself.”
We’re thrilled that Jesy has been able to gain a new perspective after doing what was best for her. She also promised fans many exciting announcements on the horizon, so I think we can all agree that the best is only yet to come!
