Could Kim Kardashian be a statue smuggler?! Yes, you heard that right; Kim’s found herself at the center of a scandal involving a statue the U.S. government says was stolen from Italy, so let’s get into what her team had to say about this.
We all know that Kim Kardashian is a famous reality star, business mogul, activist, and a bonafide BILLIONAIRE! But this week, news surfaced that she could also be an alleged antiquities smuggler?! According to The Daily Beast, the U.S. government filed a complaint asking Kim to forfeit an ancient Roman statue that was smuggled out of Italy.
The LA Times also added an analysis of the sculpture by an archaeologist from Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage that determined that the item was “looted, smuggled and illegally exported from Italy.” According to the official complaint, import documents named Kim as one of the consignees and importers.
The form states that “Kim Kardashian doing business as Noel Roberts Trust,” was listed on the documents. CNN reported that Noel Roberts Trust is an entity linked to Kim and Kanye West’s real estate purchases. But while the news broke this week, this statue “smuggle” actually happened a long time ago. The Daily Beast reported that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection statute was seized at a seaport in Los Angeles back in June 2015.
And the sculpture in question is known as Fragment of Myron’s Samian Athena. Supposedly, it’s from around the turn of the Common Era– aka the 1st or 2nd century A.D., and it’s allegedly valued at around $750,000. Dang! And while this was all news to us, apparently it was all news to Kim as well.
After this story broke, Kim’s rep spoke to CNN and said that she “never purchased this piece” and that “this is the first that she has learned of its existence.” They added, “We believe that it may have been purchased using her name without authorization because it was never received (and) she was unaware of the transaction.
We encourage an investigation and hope that it gets returned to the rightful owners.” So… who else could have purchased this statue? The court documents also identified one of the item’s shippers as an art dealer and interior designer, Axel Vervoordt.
Axel has worked with Kim and Kanye on several of their properties, so maybe it was purchased without their knowledge? CNN reported that Italian officials had questioned Axel over other art pieces in the past.
But Axel’s reps also spoke to CNN, saying that they were “informed only yesterday that the U.S. government has filed for forfeiture” of the statue and said, “there is no evidence that this piece was illegally imported from Italy. Our client, as well as our gallery and the gallery from whom we’ve bought the piece, have always acted in good faith when dealing with the work.” Again, this situation is very bizarre.
It’s an old story about an old statue that, for some reason, is all just coming to light now. At this time, Kim hasn’t spoken out directly about any of this, only through her reps. She has continued to post on her social media pages as usual as this news has been swirling around.
So we’ll keep you posted if we hear anything from Kim herself about this statue drama. For now, if you want more Kardashian news, stick around for more updated news. Also, let us know down in the comments below what you think of this crazy story and if you think Kim really did not know this statue.
