Jesy Nelson just did her very first interview after leaving Little Mix back in December. Among many things, she also revealed which former One Direction member reached out to her after her exit — let’s get into it.
On Tuesday, Jesy took to her Instagram to share her excitement with the world about being featured on the cover of Cosmopolitan U.K. for the first time as a solo artist. And in her cover story, Jesy left no stone unturned as she opened up about a lot of things — from what prompted her to leave Little Mix to what’s next for her as a solo artist.
Oh, and she also brought up all the support that she got from her fans and some fellow singers, including a former 1D star. Jesy told the mag that Liam Payne contacted her after her exit from Little Mix, but she remained tight-lipped about what the former 1D member said to her.
Liam actually came under fire after making a joke during an I.G. live, where he compared Jesy quitting Little Mix to Zayn Malik’s exit from One Direction. This is what he said: “Someone Zayn’d out! No, let’s be serious about this” Many Mixers and Directioners alike were put off by his remark as they explained it undermined both Zayn’s and Jesy’s concerns about their mental health.
It’s worth noting, however, that during that live stream, Liam was also very supportive of Jesy’s decision and offered her some words of encouragement, so we’re happy to hear that Liam went the extra mile and personally reached out to her. I mean, who would understand that kind of thing better? Going back to Jesy, in her interview, she reiterated that ultimately the reason that drove her to leave Little Mix was that she just couldn’t handle the pressure of being in a girl band.
She said — “It wasn’t that I couldn’t deal with the pressure of being in the spotlight. I was constantly compared to three other girls and that mentally drove me to a really dark place, and I couldn’t put myself through that any more.”And Jesy even pinpointed the moment when she realized that she just couldn’t go on like this.
She added: “On the day of the ‘Sweet Melody’ video, I had a panic attack on set because I didn’t look how I wanted to look, and I found it so hard to just be happy and enjoy myself. I looked at the other three and they were having the time of their life.” Jesy went on to say that there’s even a scene in the video where she’s not even present because she had a nervous breakdown and couldn’t stop sobbing in the dressing room.
And now that Jesy announced she’s back in the studio, she also took this opportunity to address all those people questioning her decision to start making music again, holding it over her head that she had quit the band to focus on her mental health. Jesy had this to say to them: “I never said when I put out my statement that I was coming out of the band to never be in the public eye or perform again, or make music.
For people to think that I would just stop working completely is crazy, because for me, working on my mental health is going to the studio and creating music that I love. That’s what clears my head and makes me happy.” So there you have it…
Though now it remains to be seen what kind of music Jesy’s gonna come out with next because she also said in this interview that even though she loved the music she made with Little Mix, it wasn’t the kind of music that she listens to…hmm! So we can’t wait to see what’s next for Jesy now that she’s flying solo and feeling good about herself.
