Research shows Android stalkerware apps pose a big threat for both victims and snoopers

Tracking software is tools and applications that are used to monitor users without letting them know and record information about their activities on the Internet. ESET’s latest research shows that tracking software is much more dangerous than you think because these applications are the Android operating system and are also vulnerable to attacks. As ESET discovered in 2019 that tracker software for Android is more than five times more than in 2018, the Stalker software application has become more and more popular, and the number of such instances on user devices will rise to 48% in 2020.

These applications usually attract many people on the Internet by showing them that it is employee monitoring software or parental control software. However, the developers of this software wrote the word “SPY” on their website so that potential stalkers know its true purpose. Tracking programs can use GPS to track the location of the user’s device, including the history of the session. ESET online activities are designed to analyze how tracking applications protect information received from users.

ESET analyzed about 86 tracker applications from 86 different vendors. ESET analyzed nearly 56 tracker applications on Android devices and found about 158 security applications. And the data leakage that may negatively affect users is even worse because attackers in these applications are also vulnerable to application vulnerabilities in these applications. ESET has determined that attackers can exploit these vulnerabilities and use them to control the victim’s device.

They can also hijack the stalker’s account, destroy the victim’s data, execute code remotely on the victim’s device, and even surround the victim by uploading fake evidence.ESET also informed the developers of the vulnerabilities of these applications, of which nearly 6 vulnerabilities fixed these problems, and 44 vendors did not even respond. Seven providers promised to resolve these weaknesses as soon as possible. ESET encourages potential customers of the Stalker application to familiarize themselves with the software before installing it. The user’s personal information may be exposed, and there is also a risk of cyberattacks. There may be a close connection between the user and the stalker, so the fraudster can also disclose information about the stalker.
