Twitter says that its image cropping AI is not very unfair, but it still stopped using it

Twitter canceled the algorithm of cropping photos instead of zooming the screen. Depending on the platform, this is a bit unfair, so it needs to be investigated. It has been found that the editing algorithm is slightly biased in certain races and genders. However, Twitter’s main complaint is that AI cannot give users flexibility. Starting in 2018, Twitter started using this algorithm to crop photos to fit the image preview. The algorithm tries to find content that is aesthetically pleasing to the user so that it can be previewed.

However, some people criticized them for distinguishing whites from blacks. In order to test whether this is indeed the case, Twitter asked some of its researchers to conduct research to evaluate their cultural choices. When testing the gender analysis algorithm, the researchers found that it prefers white women more than white women, preferring white women 7% of the time and white men 2%. Overall, it prefers whites to blacks up to 4%. Twitter also looks for sexism by checking whether the algorithm has cropped photos of women correctly, that is, cropped women’s chest or legs instead of faces.

It turns out that although the algorithm favors women 8% of the time, the crop is not inaccurate. About 3% of photos without faces cropped other content, such as shirt numbers. Twitter recognizes that algorithms can be harmful in ways they haven’t studied, and using artificial intelligence to resize photos can leave users out of a lot of control. According to Twitter, not all content on the platform must be fully coordinated with the algorithm. In this case, only humans can better judge how the image is cropped.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of cases infected by tracker software has increased dramatically

Twitter has increased the size of the picture view in its iOS and Android apps so that users can make a decision to resize the picture when it needs to be resized e.g If it is very large or wide, they will provide a preview of its appearance. Especially on Twitter for the Web, where preview clips keep popping up, the algorithm is still used although Twitter seems to think that in most cases, human judgment is preferred over machine learning.
