A new study shows whether YouTube views will have a significant impact on viewers

People think that people like to watch videos based on their likes or number of views. For example, if someone watches a video with more than one million views, they are more likely to believe that you like it because of the higher number of views than a video with fewer views. However, it seems that this is not the case. To test this belief, a survey of 819 American adults between the ages of 18 and 35 was conducted on demographic data. In the survey, participants were shown two videos against vaping and vice versa. E-cigarette videos are mainly to promote the development of e-cigarette groups and let people know why e-cigarettes can be a good choice, while anti-e-cigarette videos are public statements of non-profit organizations.

Researchers manipulate viewers by showing them a different, equal number for each video. Check which of these two videos has won the most praise and whether people really like these videos because of their popularity. After watching the video, participants assessed their persuasiveness and whether the video affected their curiosity about the relationship with e-cigarettes.

The final results of the survey showed that most respondents believed that the video was the most reliable and contained useful and interesting information, and the number of likes and views did not produce any effect. In addition, some participants watched TV instead of online video. Among these participants, many believed that the media did not provide adequate coverage compared to social media, and when asked to stop watching TV to evaluate ratings, many people think that the video has fewer views than members who are on YouTube.

The lead author of the study, Hyunyi Cho, a communications professor at Ohio State University, believes that this may be due to the fact that websites such as YouTube do not have the same geographic boundaries as media companies. There are a lot of views on YouTube, but that doesn’t mean that the information it contains can convince them. Since users cannot see the number of views on TV, it is easier to judge whether their information is compelling.
