The C.W. has officially scrapped the pilot episode of the highly anticipated Powerpuff Girls reboot after the first episode’s script was leaked, so what lies ahead for the rest of the show? Let’s break it all down.
It looks like this is one mission that Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup just couldn’t reclaim as Deadline reported that the pilot episode for the Powerpuff Girls live-action reboot had been scrapped, and the show is now set to receive a brand new re-write.
As many fans know, the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter, had already been having trouble being picked up, stars Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet, and Yana Perrault. They star as twenty-something versions of the famous crime-fighting trio.
The outlet further explained that the current script would not be “going to series in its present form” and already has plans to be reworked and re-piloted off-cycle with the four leads, including Donald Faison, as well as the same cast and crew, all in agreement to stay onboard.
At the time, there was no specific reason as to why the pilot wasn’t ordered to series. However, one possible reason for the original pilot being scrapped was the difficulty of adding a more mature spin on what were children’s cartoon characters.
Despite admitting that there is a “trio of terrific actresses” at the center of the project, Warner Bros T.V. Group President Channing Dungey revealed last week, “I’m not going to say that it hasn’t been a challenge. Bringing a children’s cartoon into live-action adulthood has been a really fine line to walk, but I think we’ve done a pretty great job walking it.”
However, this wasn’t exactly the same sentiment that fans shared after the pilot script was leaked onto the Internet, and many were quick to chime in on just how catastrophic they believed the script actually was. ‘Powerpuff Girls’ began trending on Twitter earlier this morning as many got word of what the script entailed, and as it turns out, it was packed to the brim with overly ‘woke’one-liners, cheesy comebacks, and… even threats to leak each other’s sister’s nudes. You really can’t make this stuff up, guys…
One of the Bubbles’ lines read, “Blossom’s fine. I saw on her Insta that she has a boyfriend, I saw on her LinkedIn that she got promoted, and I saw on Facebook that she still talks to grandpa despite their political differences.” Other lines used phrases like ‘triggering’ and MoveOn.Org, which had nothing to do with political ties in the script.
This caused outrage among fans, who admitted that after reading parts of the script, they weren’t even surprised that the series didn’t get picked up, calling it the “worst thing” they’ve read this month. One user tweeted that the script was, “…worse than you could have ever imagined,” and that, “At this rate, I don’t think this is salvageable.”
Another person wrote, “They talk about sharing eachothers nudes… walking in on eachother while they have sex… and… a lot more. Fire everyone who is working on this and start over.”
At this stage, there is no word on when the script will be reworked, or what steps are being taken in this regard, but we’ll do our best to keep you guys posted should more information become available.
