CUE THE MELODRAMA because Lorde might just be ready to make her musical comeback after being announced as one of the performers for the upcoming Primavera Sound Festival. Let’s get into all the details.
After what felt like an eternity of radio silence coming from Lorde, 2022 is looking like THE year of her return to the stage as she was just announced as a performer for next year’s Primavera Sound music festival along with a star-studded lineup.
The annual festival typically takes place in Barcelona. The setlist was just released on Monday, which includes many other performers like Megan Thee Stallion, Dua Lipa, Tame Impala, Disclosure, Charli X.C.X., Tyler The Creator, and Kehlani, just to name a few. According to the lineup, Lorde is set to headline the festival’s second day of the second weekend, on June 10th, 2022, along with The Strokes and Massive Attack.
The festival last took place back in 2019 with Tame Impala once again headlining, but was postponed in 2020 and again in 2021 for obvious reasons, so news of Primavera’s 2022 dates came as quite a nice surprise to fans. But it was Lorde’s comeback that had fans buzzing all over Twitter as her name immediately began trending as the setlist rolled out.
Many were quick to assume that Lorde’s name added to the lineup meant that her highly-anticipated musical comeback is well on its way as she has yet to release the follow-up to 2017’s Melodrama.
Many fans tweeted clips and memes with comments like, “LORDE IS COMING OUT OF HIBERNATION THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” Even Try Guys member Zack Kornfeld wrote, “I can’t wait for Lorde to drop the album so I can pretend no other music exists for 2 years straight.”
Lorde’s Primavera Sound festival announcement marks her first performance since 2018, as well as her second time taking the Primavera stage. The official Primavera website also appeared to tease her musical comeback, writing, “Lorde, who will emerge from her retirement with her third album after her unforgettable visit in 2018.”
Fans might recall last year, when Lorde was interviewed by good friend Cazzie David for Interview magazine, why she decided to go M.I.A. on social media, only to leave us with three photos with her latest I.G. photo shared on April 5, 2018.
She told the outlet, “Part of what made me peace out on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country.” Lorde also explained that the stress of social media, “destroys the part of her brain that can make work,” and inhibits her creativity.
While taking some much-needed time away from the spotlight, Lorde had been able to quarantine in her home country of New Zealand over the past year, where she admitted during an interview with New Zealand’s The Edge radio station that she had been “baking so much bread, you wouldn’t believe it.”
But thankfully for us, Lorde didn’t spend the entire quarantine baking bread, as she teased her musical comeback, saying that it has been “very productive.” So yeah, we’re just going to go ahead and file this one under ‘new music to look out for later this year.’
