Facebook is working with Nayatel to build fiber optic network in Pakistan

As part of its first investment in Pakistan, Facebook partnered with Nayatel to improve and expand connectivity in the country. Through this cooperation, Nayatel will own, build, maintain and operate a new optical fiber network, and provide wholesale capabilities for cellular operators and ISPs, while Facebook will invest in optical fiber construction and support network planning.

By 2022, this high-speed fiber will connect thousands of locations, expanding the capacity and geographic coverage of the Internet to 10-15 million people in eight major cities in Pakistan. Affordable broadband has become a major demand for households, especially after the Covid-19 disaster.

As part of the partnership, Nayatel will provide new fiber-optic networks that will become the core infrastructure for mobile 4G/5G broadband and fixed broadband, and will be a key driver of growth and job creation. By investing in and maintaining the network, Facebook is helping operators use fiber-optic infrastructure to improve network access.

This plan is the first of Pakistan’s Facebook, represents the country’s broader investment strategy, and improves the connectivity of the region. Tom Varghese, director of Facebook connection and access policy in the Asia-Pacific region, said in a statement that the partnership with Nayatel is part of an effort to bring fast and reliable Internet connections to people around the world, including Pakistan.
