Netflix is the second most popular video streaming platform in the United States. It has maintained a growth momentum in recent years. However, it has nearly 208 million paying subscribers during this period, and its growth has great obstacles. Starting in 2021, 41% of Netflix users use the platform for free due to the practice of sharing accounts and passwords.
The platform currently receives complaints from its real subscribers, stating that they are not using any type of VPN (Virtual Private Network) or proxy site and still can’t see some content. After being severely criticized by legitimate users, the company began its efforts to ban various VPN providers in 2014. VPN providers and other users have proposed several alternative ways to use the services.
The company has partnered with the online payment service PayPal to separate payment processing services related to various VPN providers. This situation continued for many years. Some VPNs use country-specific solutions for addressing, but company systems treat these types of addresses as true subscribers, so users outside the United States can easily bypass zone locks.
This is not a secret way and it did the job for a while. After receiving multiple complaints from users, the system discovered the reason why the IP address was associated with VPN or other routing software. The company has now decided to block national IP addresses assigned to certain VPN providers.
According to the TF report, WeVPN first noticed that the company blocked its IP address. The main reason is that some legitimate subscribers find it difficult to view the content, and even do not use VPN or other routing software. Other users will not be able to access it and will be notified that their VPN has been disconnected.
The company reserves the right to stop VPN users and other proxies in its services. However, they cannot block all fragments of the IP address. The company is aware of this problem but has not publicly acknowledged it. The customer service only gave a solution and asked the ISP why? The IP address is linked to VPN or routing software.
